Flood Alert: Over 2,000 Communities in 30 States, FCT Face Risk in Next Two Weeks
More than 2,000 communities across 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are on flood alert, with residents warned to brace for possible flooding over the next two weeks.
The warning means millions of residents living in vulnerable communities may face disruptions to homes, movement, businesses and livelihoods as heavy rainfall combines with saturated soils, rapid surface runoff, overwhelmed drainage systems and rising river levels.
The Director, Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Mr Usman Bokani, said Akwa Ibom, Delta, Kogi, Benue, Rivers, Bayelsa and Ebonyi are expected to be among the most critical areas during the forecast period.
He classified Adamawa, Kwara, Taraba and Kebbi as high-risk locations, while some communities in Borno, the FCT, Plateau, Nasarawa and Yobe are expected to experience moderate flooding.
According to Bokani, the combination of elevated soil moisture, rainfall, rapid surface runoff, drainage surcharge and rising river levels could trigger flooding in affected communities within the forecast period.
With the warning coming amid the ongoing rainy season, residents in vulnerable locations are being urged not to wait until floodwaters arrive before taking precautions.
Bokani advised residents to sustain preventive measures, comply with evacuation orders when issued and keep children away from floodwater.
He also warned motorists and pedestrians to avoid driving or walking through flowing floodwater, while residents should disconnect electricity where necessary to reduce the risk of electrocution.
The warning is particularly important for communities in flood-prone areas, where rising water can quickly cut off roads, damage property, disrupt businesses and expose families to serious safety risks.
Authorities are therefore urging residents to remain alert, monitor official flood warnings and act early whenever evacuation becomes necessary.
