“OPAY Shutdown Rumour: Is the Fintech Giant Really Going on Indefinite Break?”
Social Media Users Urge Opay to Address Shutdown Rumour as Fake Notice Sparks Panic
A wave of concern has swept across Nigeria’s social media space following the circulation of a document allegedly suggesting that leading fintech platform, Opay, plans to suspend operations indefinitely from September 1.
The unsigned document, which bears the Opay logo, reportedly advised customers to withdraw their funds from the platform as soon as possible, triggering anxiety among users who rely on the digital payment service for daily transactions.
Some social media users have called on Opay management to urgently clarify the situation, warning that silence could fuel panic withdrawals and damage public confidence in the platform.
They argued that a rumour of this nature, if left unchecked, could lead to a loss of customer trust and create unnecessary pressure on the company.
One user cautioned others against sharing unverified information, saying:
“Please always be sure of what you post before the company will sue you. How sure are you with this writing?”
Another expressed fear over the development, saying:
“Honestly, this scares me ooo.”
However, some users dismissed the document as fake, insisting that Opay is not shutting down.
One participant wrote:
“Opay isn’t going anywhere. Please ignore any notice of closure. It’s fake.”
The user, while describing the document as false, urged the company to officially respond to prevent further misinformation, adding:
“They should counter the notice. People have lost enough money.”
Another contributor alleged that the document could be the work of individuals seeking to damage the company’s reputation.
“Please, Opay isn’t closing down and this didn’t emanate from them. It’s the handwork of the enemies of the company. Opay has stepped on many toes,” the user stated.
But another user insisted that Opay needed to act quickly to calm fears among customers.
“There’s no smoke without a fire. They should as a matter of urgency step in to allay the fears of their customers,” the participant said.
Opay, which operates digital payment services in Nigeria, also has interests in financial technology solutions including EasyMoney and Okash digital lending platforms.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from Opay confirming or denying the authenticity of the circulating document.
The document reads,
Opay
