UK Pledges Support for Abia Economy, Digital Development and Investment
Abia State is seeking to deepen its economic ties with the United Kingdom as both sides explore opportunities to attract investment, expand digital access and create sustainable economic opportunities for residents.
The British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Jonny Baxter, made the commitment when he visited Governor Alex Otti at his country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.
For businesses and young people looking to participate more fully in the digital economy, the partnership could open up opportunities in areas ranging from digital skills and infrastructure to investment and enterprise development.

Baxter said the United Kingdom was interested in supporting Abia in business, digital development and other key sectors, noting that such cooperation could help attract private investment and create sustainable economic opportunities.
He disclosed that Abia is among the states being supported under the United Kingdom’s Digital Access Programme.
According to him, the programme is designed to promote digital inclusion through improved policy and regulation, enabling infrastructure and capacity building.
Responding, Governor Alex Otti said Abia was ready to deepen economic cooperation with the United Kingdom, particularly in power, manufacturing, waste management and healthcare.
The governor said stronger collaboration in these areas could support the state’s drive to expand economic activity and improve the environment for businesses and investors.
Otti also highlighted the state’s partnership with the Federal Government on an international airport project, which he said is expected to improve connectivity and access to Abia.
For a state known for its large community of entrepreneurs and manufacturers, the proposed areas of cooperation could have implications beyond government institutions, particularly for businesses seeking reliable infrastructure, digital connectivity and access to wider markets.
The engagement therefore places investment, digital inclusion and infrastructure at the centre of efforts to strengthen Abia’s economy and create more opportunities for residents.
