Shettima Returns From India, Outlines What Nigeria Gained at BRICS Summit

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India, where he pushed Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic interests and sought deeper cooperation in trade, investment, technology and development.

For Nigerians looking for tangible opportunities from the high-level engagement, Shettima’s trip focused on areas capable of directly affecting jobs, investment, healthcare, energy and digital development, with discussions spanning crude oil trade, pharmaceuticals, defence, fintech, renewable energy and digital technology.

During the visit, the Vice President held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on expanding Nigeria-India economic and strategic cooperation, including opportunities in trade and investment.

Shettima also met the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s position in global trade and economic affairs.

At the BRICS summit, the Vice President delivered President Tinubu’s call for reforms of global financial and governance institutions, while presenting Nigeria as a strategic gateway to Africa’s expanding consumer and investment market.

His engagements with BRICS countries also covered agriculture, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, healthcare, energy and human capital development.

The Federal Government says the engagements are aimed at opening more avenues for economic cooperation and investment while positioning Nigeria to benefit from emerging opportunities in technology, energy, trade and other critical sectors.

Shettima’s return marks the end of the high-level diplomatic mission, with attention now shifting to how the opportunities discussed in India can translate into concrete investments, partnerships and economic benefits for Nigerians.
