AU Delegation Meets INEC, Assesses Nigeria’s 2027 Election Readiness
Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 general elections have come under the scrutiny of the African Union (AU), as the continental body begins an assessment of the country’s electoral readiness.
The AU Pre-Election Needs Assessment Mission visited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja to examine preparations for the elections and identify areas where additional support may be required.
INEC said it is determined to deliver a transparent, credible, inclusive and peaceful 2027 general election, stressing that its preparations are focused on ensuring that eligible Nigerians can participate effectively in the democratic process.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, represented by National Commissioner, Mrs Rhoda Gumus, said the AU visit provided an opportunity for both institutions to strengthen cooperation ahead of the polls.
She said the Commission was already working on its operational, logistical and technological preparations to improve the efficiency of the election and enhance participation.
For millions of Nigerians who will head to polling units in 2027, the preparations could determine how smoothly they are able to register, vote and have their choices accurately reflected in the final results.
Leader of the AU delegation and former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, His Excellency Demeke Mekonnen, said the mission was in Nigeria to assess the country’s overall electoral preparedness and identify areas requiring further support and intervention.
Mekonnen said the team would review activities already underway, identify existing gaps and risks, and explore opportunities for technical assistance.
The assessment will cover key areas including voter registration and the integrity of the voters’ register, electoral technology, logistics, funding, inclusion, transparency, dispute resolution, security coordination and results management.
He also reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to working with Nigeria to strengthen democratic governance and credible elections across the continent.
With the 2027 elections expected to draw intense public attention, the AU engagement adds another layer of international scrutiny to Nigeria’s preparations and the push for an electoral process that voters can trust
