A Professor of Sociology at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Omololu Soyombo, has called for an end to the excessive deployment of police officers to Very Important Personalities (VIPs), saying the practice is diverting personnel from communities and other areas where they are urgently needed.

Soyombo

Soyombo made the call in his inaugural lecture, titled, “Why We Are Where We Are: A Sociological Analysis of the Trials and Travails of Security Control in Nigeria.”

The lecture came days before the professor’s retirement from the university, providing an opportunity for him to reflect on Nigeria’s worsening security challenges and what must be done to build a safer society.

He also called for improved conditions of service for police officers and other security personnel, saying better welfare would strengthen their morale and improve their effectiveness in protecting lives and property.
