LAWMA DEPLOYS EIGHT COMPACTOR TRUCKS TO CLEAR WASTE ALONG AYOBO–ISEFUN ROAD

Enforcement, advocacy teams move against re-dumping as sanitation operation intensifies
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has launched a major waste evacuation operation along Ayobo–Isefun Road, deploying eight compactor trucks and a large team of sanitation workers to clear accumulated refuse from the road median.
The exercise forms part of the Authority’s sustained efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation, promote its zero-waste initiative and prevent indiscriminate waste disposal across Lagos State.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said on Sunday that the operation was aimed at restoring environmental cleanliness along the corridor and addressing the recurring problem of waste accumulation.
He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to providing the necessary equipment and manpower to sustain a cleaner environment, while tackling the practices responsible for the persistent re-dumping of refuse.
“Our commitment to achieving a cleaner Lagos remains unwavering. We will continue to deploy the necessary equipment and manpower to clear accumulated waste, while also addressing the behaviours and service gaps that contribute to its recurrence. The evacuation will continue until the entire stretch is clean, and we will not allow cleared locations to become dumping points again,” he said.
Despite Sunday morning rainfall, sanitation workers and members of LAWMA’s management team remained at the site to ensure the effective evacuation of accumulated refuse, leaving most sections of the road visibly clean.
The operation was complemented by the deployment of enforcement officers, who served compliance notices on premises found to be violating approved waste management regulations.
LAWMA’s Advocacy Team, working alongside Environmental Health Officers, also engaged residents, traders and other waste generators along the corridor, sensitising them on proper waste disposal practices and warning against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the road median and other unauthorised locations.
The Authority warned that stiffer sanctions would be imposed on persistent offenders, including erring Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators whose service failures contribute to waste accumulation in the area.
LAWMA emphasised that the intervention goes beyond waste evacuation, combining enforcement, public sensitisation and continuous monitoring to tackle the underlying causes of recurring refuse accumulation and prevent cleared locations from becoming illegal dumping sites.
The evacuation exercise is scheduled to continue on Monday until the entire stretch of Ayobo–Isefun Road is cleared.
Residents, traders, businesses and other waste generators along the corridor were urged to cooperate with the sanitation and enforcement teams, comply with approved waste management guidelines and desist from indiscriminate refuse disposal.
The Authority reiterated that maintaining a clean and healthy environment requires collective responsibility, urging residents to support government efforts towards a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.
