LAWMA BOOSTS COMMUNITY RECYCLING, ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP EFFORTS

Distributes 100 recycling bins at Osborne Foreshore, supports Ijora-Badia clean-up

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified efforts to promote responsible waste management and environmental sustainability through its Community Buy-Back Programme at Osborne Foreshore Phase 1 and support for a community clean-up exercise in Ijora-Badia, Lagos.

The initiatives are aimed at strengthening community participation in waste sorting, recycling and environmental sanitation, while encouraging residents to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the interventions reflected the Authority’s commitment to promoting sustainable waste management practices and fostering community ownership of environmental cleanliness.

He noted that achieving a cleaner Lagos required more than waste collection, stressing the need to change public attitudes towards waste generation, sorting and disposal.

“Achieving a cleaner Lagos requires more than collecting waste; it requires changing how we generate, sort and dispose of waste. We are supporting communities with the awareness and practical tools they need to participate actively in responsible waste management and recycling,” he said.

Under the Community Buy-Back Programme, LAWMA is distributing 100 recycling bins to households at Osborne Foreshore Phase 1, alongside sensitisation activities to encourage waste separation at source and promote recycling.

The bins, which are properly tagged for identification and accountability, are being distributed through the estate’s Facility Manager to ensure effective coordination and monitoring.

The LAWMA Academy is also conducting sensitisation sessions to educate residents on the proper use of the recycling bins. Specific addresses and the number of bins allocated to each sector are being documented to ensure transparency, accountability and effective project monitoring.

In a related development, LAWMA supported a community clean-up exercise in Ijora-Badia, organised by the Sustainable Urban Future Development Initiative (SUDFI) to commemorate World Cleanup Day 2026 and promote environmental responsibility and healthier communities.

The exercise attracted active participation from members of the Joint Abete Community Development Association (CDA), who joined the sanitation activities, demonstrating the importance of collective action in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

The clean-up covered Adetola/Afolabi Aladia Street, Lawan Close and Caliberian Oladehinde Avenue, where accumulated waste and blocked drainage channels were cleared to improve environmental sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding.

Executives of the Joint Abete CDA commended LAWMA and SUDFI for supporting the exercise, while appealing to residents to embrace proper waste disposal practices and take greater responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings.

LAWMA reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with communities, residential estates and other stakeholders to promote responsible waste disposal, source separation and recycling, while encouraging residents to actively participate in initiatives aimed at building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.
