At 28, Umahi’s Son Becomes Ebonyi Council Chairman, Faces ‘Political Connection’ Backlash

At just 28 years old, Osborne Umahi has stepped into one of the most visible grassroots political positions in Ebonyi State, becoming the new Chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area.

But while his emergence may be celebrated as a sign that Nigeria’s “young shall rule” aspiration is gradually becoming a reality, his victory has also triggered a familiar debate over political connections and access to power.

Osborne, son of the Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, was among the 13 newly elected local government chairmen sworn into office by Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru.

The chairmen and their vice chairmen took their oaths of office at a colourful ceremony held at the Christian Ecumenical Centre, attended by political leaders, friends, relatives and members of the All Progressives Congress across the state.

For many young Nigerians watching his emergence, the appointment represents an encouraging example of youth participation in governance.

At 28, Osborne is entering public office at an age when many young Nigerians are still struggling to find a foothold in Nigeria’s political system.

But his family background has also placed a different spotlight on his achievement.

Some social-media commentators have questioned whether a young Nigerian without a powerful political connection could have achieved a similar feat, arguing that being the son of a former governor and serving minister gives Osborne an advantage that most young people do not have.

Those reactions have turned his emergence into a broader conversation about youth inclusion, political mentorship and whether Nigeria’s political space is genuinely open to young people or remains heavily influenced by family and established connections.

Beyond the controversy, Osborne now faces the more important challenge of translating his youthful energy into tangible improvements for the people of Ohaozara.

Speaking after his inauguration, the new council chairman pledged to focus on rural development, economic empowerment and an agricultural revolution aimed at improving the livelihoods of residents.

Governor Nwifuru urged the new chairmen and their deputies to remain patient, accountable and receptive to the views of the people.

He reminded them that their swearing-in marked the beginning of a responsibility to listen to the aspirations of their constituents and serve them diligently.

The governor also cautioned the vice chairmen against actions that could create unnecessary friction with their respective chairmen.

As part of efforts to widen participation in governance at the grassroots, Nwifuru announced plans to appoint 10 executive assistants from each of the 171 political wards in the state.

For Osborne Umahi, however, the real test begins now.

His age has made his emergence noteworthy, while his family name has made it controversial. What Nigerians in Ohaozara will ultimately judge him by is neither his age nor his parentage, but what changes they can see in their communities, farms, roads, businesses and livelihoods during his tenure.

At 28, he has earned the opportunity to lead.

The bigger question is whether he can use that opportunity to prove that youth in politics can mean more than a change of age—it can also mean a change in the quality of grassroots leadership.
