Why JAMB Is Collecting ₦4,000 From Admission Seekers
Admission seekers worried about an additional ₦4,000 charge by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) can now breathe easier, as the board has explained that the payment is a one-time fee for verification of their O’Level results.
The charge had triggered criticism from candidates, parents and members of the public, with many questioning why admission seekers should pay another fee during an already costly admission process.
JAMB, in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), clarified in a joint statement issued in Abuja that candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions are required to pay the ₦4,000 only once for verification of their WASSCE/O’Level results.
The two examination bodies said candidates whose admissions are being processed through JAMB will have their WAEC results verified once through the JAMB platform.
Once completed, the outcome of the verification will be made available to the tertiary institution where the candidate is seeking admission.
JAMB and WAEC stressed that candidates should make the payment only through the designated JAMB verification platform and not through their preferred tertiary institutions.
The verified results will subsequently be used by tertiary institutions for screening, admission processing and other administrative purposes.
According to the two bodies, WAEC has authorised JAMB to share the outcome of the verification exercise with relevant tertiary institutions.
The arrangement is expected to spare candidates the frustration and expense of repeatedly verifying their O’Level results at different institutions or JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test centres.
JAMB and WAEC therefore urged admission seekers to complete the verification once through the JAMB-provided service, assuring them that the verified result would be available for use by the relevant institution.
They said the collaboration was aimed at reducing unnecessary costs and simplifying the admission process, while ensuring the integrity and security of candidates’ academic records.
