UK Launches Digital Reform Programme in Abia to Improve Public Services, Create Jobs

The initiative, known as the Policy, Regulatory and Institutional Reforms Enabling Digital Transformation (SPRIRT) programme, is expected to support reforms that could make it easier for citizens and businesses to interact with government in an increasingly digital economy. Speaking at the launch in Umuahia, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Jonny Baxter, said the programme was designed to create an enabling environment for investment and digital innovation in Abia.

The approach reflects a growing push to move government processes away from slow, paper-based systems towards faster and more accessible digital services.

For businesses and young people in particular, the expansion of digital infrastructure and skills could also create new opportunities in areas such as technology services, entrepreneurship, remote work and digital commerce.

The SPRIRT programme is funded by the UK Government under its Digital Access Programme and implemented by the Initiative for Digital Inclusion (IDI).

The launch further strengthens the digital partnership between the United Kingdom and Abia State, with both sides seeking to use technology not simply as a communication tool, but as a pathway to better governance, skills development and economic opportunity.
