FLOOD ALERT: ANAMBRA WARNS RESIDENTS AS NIMET PREDICTS ABOVE-NORMAL FLOODING
Residents of Anambra State have been urged to remain vigilant and take early precautions as the state government raises the alarm over the possibility of above-normal flooding during the rainy season.
The warning follows a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, which listed Anambra among states likely to experience increased flooding this year.
For residents living in low-lying and flood-prone communities, the alert is a reminder to prepare early rather than wait until rising waters threaten homes, roads and livelihoods.
The State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed this in a statement issued in Awka, urging residents to take the weather forecast seriously.
Mefor noted that Anambra’s location within the Niger Delta belt makes the state particularly vulnerable to flooding, adding that the government is taking proactive measures to reduce the impact of possible flooding.
He called on residents to remain alert throughout the rainy season and pay attention to official weather and emergency warnings.
The Commissioner also advised residents to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rainfall, whether on foot or by vehicle, warning against taking risks on flooded roads and other unsafe routes.
People living in flood-prone areas were further advised to relocate to safer locations where necessary and seek assistance promptly whenever they face an emergency.
The State Government reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, while appealing to residents to cooperate with authorities and take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of loss of lives and property.
With heavy rainfall capable of disrupting homes, businesses, transportation and daily activities, the government urged residents to treat the flood forecast as an early warning and prepare accordingly.Suggested hashtags:
