Tinubu Demands Global Governance Reforms, Urges BRICS to Act on Africa’s Economic Priorities

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for urgent reforms of global governance structures and international financial institutions to reflect today’s economic and demographic realities.
Tinubu made the call at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India, where he was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The President said Nigeria supports a more representative international system, including reforms to the United Nations Security Council, to give greater voice to emerging economies and developing countries in global decision-making.
He also challenged BRICS to move beyond dialogue and translate its commitments into practical actions that can deliver tangible benefits for member states and the wider developing world.
Tinubu positioned Nigeria as a gateway to Africa’s expanding consumer and investment market, particularly through the African Continental Free Trade Area, AfCFTA.
He urged investors to explore opportunities in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare and critical minerals, stressing the importance of technology transfer, local value addition and job creation.
On climate change, the President called for greater access to affordable climate finance and technology transfer for Africa.
He identified renewable energy, gas, climate-smart agriculture and sustainable infrastructure as areas where stronger international cooperation could help African countries address development challenges while building resilience to climate and economic shocks.
Tinubu said Nigeria’s engagement with BRICS should go beyond diplomatic relations and translate into increased trade, investment, human capital development and industrialisation.
He added that deeper cooperation with BRICS could help Nigeria and other developing economies build greater resilience against global economic disruptions while creating new opportunities for sustainable growth.
