Soludo Constitutes Judicial Commission to Address Anam–Aguleri Communal Crisis
Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has constituted a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the communal crisis between the Umuoba Anam and Aguleri communities, as part of efforts to prevent further escalation and achieve a lasting peaceful resolution.
The Commission is chaired by retired Justice Nkemdilim Izuakor, with Ven. Onyinye Ilione, Rev. Fr. Cyril Elochukwu Mokwe, C. P. Ndianefo, Esq., HRH Peter Chukwuma Anigbogu and HRH Peter Ezeamama as members. Ekenechukwu Okoye, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Boundary Matters, will serve as Secretary.
The Commission is mandated to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the dispute and the crisis that erupted between the two communities from October 1 to 4, 2026.
It is also expected to identify factors that could trigger further hostilities involving either community or neighbouring communities and recommend measures to ensure lasting peace between Anam and Aguleri, as well as other affected areas.
According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the Anambra State Government, Mrs Chiamaka Nnake, the Commission is required to consider all relevant court judgments and contractual agreements in the course of its investigation.
The Commission is expected to conclude its inquiry and submit its report to the Governor on or before February 28, 2027.
The development builds on earlier peace efforts initiated by Governor Soludo, who convened a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Awka. The meeting brought together traditional rulers, presidents-general and community leaders from Aguleri, Umueri and Anam, where the parties agreed to a total cessation of hostilities.
The statement noted that Governor Soludo had reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that peace, justice and the rule of law prevail.
He urged stakeholders from the affected communities to cooperate fully with the Commission and refrain from any action capable of undermining ongoing peace efforts.
The inquiry is expected to provide a framework for addressing the underlying issues behind the dispute and supporting efforts to restore peaceful relations among the affected communities.
