Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Olufemi Hamzat, has visited Evangelist Chukwuebuka Anozie Obi, founder of the Zion Prayer Movement Outreach, in what comes amid growing political interest in the race to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Hamzat shared details of the visit on his Facebook page, accompanied by photographs of his meeting with the influential cleric.
The visit has generated reactions on social media, with some commenters suggesting that politicians are increasingly turning to religious leaders and influential faith communities to strengthen their support ahead of elections.
Although Hamzat did not explicitly describe the visit as a campaign activity, its timing has drawn attention amid political discussions surrounding the next Lagos governorship election.
Explaining the purpose of the visit, the deputy governor said it provided an opportunity to connect with the ministry and appreciate the contributions of faith-based organisations to society.
“I visited Zion Prayer Movement Outreach (ZPMO), led by Evangelist Chukwuebuka Anozie Obi. It was a chance to connect with the ministry and appreciate the role faith communities play in supporting people and strengthening our society,” Hamzat wrote.
He added that his vision for Lagos was anchored on inclusion, improved welfare and creating opportunities for residents to thrive.
“As we work towards a Lagos where every resident has the opportunity to thrive, I believe progress must go hand in hand with inclusion and a genuine commitment to the welfare of our people.
“I am committed to listening and working with all stakeholders to build a Lagos that works for everyone,” he stated.
The visit has further highlighted the growing intersection of religion and politics in Nigeria, where prominent religious leaders often command substantial followings and exert considerable influence within their communities.
However, whether the engagement will translate into political support for Hamzat remains to be seen.
