Hospital Management Says Pharmacists Are Critical to Better Health Outcomes

Randle General Hospital, Surulere, Lagos, has joined pharmacists and healthcare institutions around the world to mark the 2026 World Pharmacists Day, with a renewed emphasis on the profession’s role in improving patient care and health outcomes.

The celebration, organised by the hospital’s Pharmacy Department, was held at the Conference Room of Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital, Iyun, Surulere, under the theme, “Empowering Pharmacists for a Healthier Future.”

The theme highlighted the growing importance of pharmacists in healthcare delivery and the need to strengthen their capacity to respond to the changing demands of the health sector.

In her opening remarks, the Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer of Randle General Hospital, Dr. Lateefat Omolara Agbaje, acknowledged the critical contribution of pharmacists to patient care, particularly in ensuring that patients receive appropriate medications and achieve better treatment outcomes.

Agbaje, who was represented by the Director, Clinical Services and Training, Dr. Abosede Adabale, noted that improved healthcare delivery and positive outcomes for patients could not be achieved without the active involvement and collaboration of pharmacists.

She commended pharmacists for their commitment to providing quality services and said the annual celebration was an opportunity for the hospital management to recognise their contributions and remind them of the value placed on their work.

The pharmacists marked the occasion in customised shirts, adding colour and a sense of professional identity to the celebration.

Speaking during the event, the Director of Pharmacy, Randle General Hospital, Pharmacist (Dr.) Assa Gabriel, said the theme was designed to underscore the growing importance of pharmacists in modern healthcare.

He highlighted the evolving responsibilities of pharmacists and their contribution to effective healthcare services within hospitals.

The Guest Lecturer, Pharm. (Dr.) Solape Adenuga, delivered a presentation titled “Unlocking the Potential of Pharmacists to Shape the Future of Healthcare in Lagos State.”

Adenuga noted that the increasing complexity of healthcare had made the role of medicines even more central to patient care, urging pharmacists to continually improve their professional knowledge and clinical skills.

She stressed the importance of medicine availability to patient safety and encouraged pharmacists to make effective use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) as a digital tool for data management and improved service delivery.

The guest speaker also urged pharmacists to avoid working in professional silos, but instead collaborate with other healthcare professionals, build relationships and trust, and embrace continuous professional development.

She further encouraged them to understand global standards of pharmacy practice and work towards achieving them, while exploring the opportunities and potentials within the profession.

Presenting the rapporteur’s report and key take-home messages, Pharm. Adewunmi Ogunbowale challenged pharmacists at the hospital to focus on initiatives capable of positively transforming the image of Randle General Hospital’s Pharmacy Department.

She urged them to distinguish themselves through innovative and impactful services that would strengthen public confidence in the hospital and leave a positive impression among Lagos residents.

Members of the hospital management and other staff attended the celebration, which ended with group photographs and interactions among participants.

The annual World Pharmacists Day is observed on September 25 to highlight the contributions of pharmacists to healthcare systems and promote greater awareness of their role in improving the safe and effective use of medicines.
