Benue Blockade: Obi’s Response Shows Why Nigeria Needs Responsible Leadership — Supporter

According to him, responding with force would have meant descending to the level of those responsible for the obstruction, rather than demonstrating the restraint expected from a presidential candidate. Benue Blockade: Obi’s Response Shows Why Nigeria Needs Responsible Leadership — Supporter

A concerned Nigerian, Stephen Emele, has condemned the reported blocking of Peter Obi from entering Benue State, describing the Labour Party presidential hopeful’s response to the incident as evidence of restraint and responsible leadership.

Emele argued that Obi could not have engaged the people who allegedly blocked his convoy without risking violence and potentially worsening an already tense situation.

According to him, responding with force would have meant descending to the level of those responsible for the obstruction, rather than demonstrating the restraint expected from a presidential candidate.

In a social media post now attracting attention, Emele urged Nigerians to emulate what he described as Obi’s composure and commitment to decency, particularly when provoked.

He questioned whether Obi’s critics expected him to order his security team to open fire, warning that such a response could have resulted in deaths and provided grounds for his arrest.

Emele drew a parallel with former President Goodluck Jonathan’s handling of political tensions during the 2015 elections, recalling Jonathan’s widely cited position that his political ambition was not worth the life of any Nigerian.

He argued that Obi, as a major opposition political figure, should avoid any confrontation that could expose him to unnecessary legal or political consequences.

“A man surrounded by enemies must not eat carelessly,” Emele wrote, stressing that Obi should remain civil even when confronted with political hostility.

The writer also dismissed expectations that Obi should adopt an aggressive posture, insisting that a presidential candidate does not need to respond to every provocation with force.

He maintained that Obi could not simply force his way into a state against resistance from state authorities or security agencies, adding that doing so could escalate tensions and undermine his political aspirations.

Emele therefore urged Obi’s supporters to understand the strategic implications of his restraint rather than interpreting it as weakness.

He concluded that the former Anambra State governor’s decision not to respond violently to the reported blockade demonstrated the kind of discipline, restraint and respect for human life that Nigerians should expect from political leaders.

The reported Benue incident has continued to generate debate over political tolerance, citizens’ freedom of movement and the responsibilities of security agencies and political actors during the 2027 election build-up.”
