A 26-year-old man, Kosisochukwu Ibekwe, allegedly climbed a fence with the aid of a ladder to gain access to a building in Alor, Anambra State, intending to sexually assault a 23-year-old nursing student, but allegedly ended up killing her during a struggle, police say.

The victim, identified as Miss Vivian Chilaka, was allegedly stabbed to death on June 14, 2026, in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.

The Anambra State Police Command said Ibekwe was arrested on September 4, 2026, following what it described as “credible and actionable information” received by the Command.

According to the preliminary findings of the investigation, the suspect allegedly used a ladder to climb the fence and gain entry into the building, with the initial intention of sexually assaulting the victim.

The police said that, during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed that a struggle broke out between him and Chilaka, during which he allegedly used a knife to stab her, resulting in her death.

The Command, however, said the suspect’s claims are still being investigated and must be corroborated before any further conclusions are drawn.

The police also said Ibekwe had allegedly made revelations linking him to other similar incidents within the community.

Those claims, the Command stressed, are also being subjected to thorough investigation and corroboration.

The development has also cleared the landlord who had earlier come under suspicion following the death of the nursing student.

The police said the landlord has been exonerated based on findings from the ongoing investigation and urged members of the public to disregard earlier suspicions against him.

Ibekwe remains in police custody as investigators continue to examine his alleged involvement in the murder and other related criminal incidents.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, issued the statement on behalf of the Command.

Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Nnanna Ama, commended residents of Alor for their cooperation, patience and support throughout the investigation.

Ama assured the public that the Command would continue to pursue every credible lead and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law.
