Hundreds of supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Zuru Local Government Area of Kebbi State have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging their support for Governor Nasir Idris ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defectors, led by prominent ADC member and House of Representatives aspirant Anas Aliyu Gujiya, announced their decision at a political gathering in Zuru, where they were received by Governor Idris.
In a notable show of political support, Gujiya and his supporters also donated four campaign vehicles to the governor to support his political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Gujiya and Hussaini Aliyu of the Malami Support Organization (MSO) said their decision to join the APC was motivated by their desire to support the state government’s development agenda.
Receiving the new members, Governor Idris thanked Almighty Allah for making the occasion possible and welcomed them into the ruling party.
He assured the defectors that the APC remained open to individuals willing to contribute to the unity, progress and development of Kebbi State, adding that they would have equal opportunities to participate in the party’s activities.
The governor also addressed the security challenges confronting Kebbi State and the country, describing insecurity as a national concern that requires collective action and sustained cooperation among governments, security agencies and local communities.
He said his administration would continue to work with security agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen security, restore peace and facilitate the safe return of displaced persons to their communities.
Idris urged residents to remain united and avoid politicising security concerns, stressing that cooperation, mutual understanding and collective responsibility were necessary to address the situation.
The governor expressed appreciation to the defectors for the confidence they had placed in his administration, describing their decision as encouragement to sustain efforts towards delivering democratic dividends.
On infrastructure, Idris acknowledged concerns over the condition of some roads in the state and pledged to pursue appropriate interventions, including on roads under the responsibility of the Federal Government.
He also commended political leaders, traditional rulers, community stakeholders and other individuals contributing to peacebuilding efforts, urging them to sustain their support for initiatives aimed at improving security and promoting development across Kebbi State.
The defection adds to political realignments taking place ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political parties work to consolidate their support bases and attract new members.
