Police Sergeant Killed After Being Run Over During Stop-and-Search in Lagos

A police sergeant, Johnson Okediji, has died after he was allegedly knocked down and dragged underneath a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in Egbeda, Lagos State.

The incident, according to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, occurred on Saturday, September 26, 2026, along Olugbede Street, Egbeda.

Briefing journalists on the activities of the Command during the month of September, CP Fatai said police officers had signalled a Lexus ES 350, with registration number FKJ 223 KX, driven by 20-year-old Olumide Olusola, to stop.

The Commissioner explained that the driver initially stopped but suddenly sped off as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver’s side of the vehicle.

CP Fatai said the vehicle knocked down the police officer and dragged him underneath it for several metres, despite repeated attempts by police officers and passers-by to stop the driver.

He added that the driver was eventually chased and arrested, while Sergeant Okediji sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries.

According to the Commissioner, the injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital before being referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“His remains have been deposited at Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicle has been recovered to the station,” CP Fatai said.

During a brief interview with journalists after his parade, Olusola reportedly claimed that the vehicle’s brake failed and that he was unable to stop it.

“I did not kill the policeman intentionally; it was due to the vehicle’s brake failure,” he said.Hashtags:
