NNPC Welcomes $800m Ima Gas Project FID, Targets More Gas for Nigeria

Nigeria’s drive to expand domestic gas supply has received a major boost with the Final Investment Decision, FID, on the 800-million-dollar Ima Gas Project, which is expected to deliver more gas for industries and expand processing capacity at Nigeria LNG Limited.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Ltd., welcomed the investment decision, describing it as a significant vote of confidence in the country’s upstream gas sector.

Ima Gas is expected to produce about 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, with a major portion of the output earmarked as feedgas for Nigeria LNG Limited.

Increased gas supply from the project is expected to support the expansion of the Bonny Island plant from its current 22 million tonnes per annum capacity to 30 million tonnes per annum.

For Nigeria’s energy and industrial sectors, the development could mean more reliable access to a critical energy resource while creating opportunities across the gas value chain.

NNPC Ltd. attributed the FID to the fiscal and regulatory measures introduced through Presidential Directives issued in 2024. The measures provided incentives for non-associated gas projects, streamlined contracting processes and helped reduce development costs.

Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Bashir Ojulari, described the project as a decisive vote of confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector, noting that the reforms had helped create more competitive terms and a predictable investment environment.

Beyond the immediate investment, NNPC Ltd. said it remains committed to working with government, regulators and industry partners to sustain investment in Nigeria’s gas industry.

The company noted that developing the country’s gas resources remains important to industrialisation, job creation and long-term economic growth.

With the Ima Gas Project now reaching FID, attention will shift to the development and delivery of the project, as Nigeria seeks to translate its substantial gas resources into increased domestic supply, industrial activity and economic opportunities.
