LAWMA Moves to Clear Illegal Structures at Olusosun Dumpsite

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has begun moves to remove illegal structures and clear encroachment at the Olusosun Dumpsite, one of Lagos’ major waste disposal facilities.

The action, which commenced on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, is aimed at protecting the dumpsite from activities that could obstruct waste operations and create additional environmental and safety concerns for workers and people around the facility.

LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the Authority had started issuing Removal Notices to owners and occupants of shanties and other illegal structures identified within the dumpsite.

The affected occupants have been directed to remove their structures and vacate the area within the stipulated period, in line with the law.

Gbadegesin said keeping the facility accessible and free from encroachment was critical to ensuring that waste could be received and managed safely and efficiently.

For Lagos residents, the issue goes beyond clearing structures. Any obstruction at a major waste facility can affect the movement of waste from homes, businesses and public spaces, with possible consequences for sanitation and public health.

The LAWMA boss warned that encroachment and other illegal activities could undermine operations at the dumpsite and compromise efforts to maintain an orderly waste management system.

He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to protecting waste infrastructure and promoting a cleaner, safer and more liveable Lagos through sustainable waste management.

The development comes as LAWMA continues its broader push to enforce environmental regulations and improve waste management operations across the state.
