Nelly Monday
A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse into a drainage channel during rainfall in Meiran, Lagos.
Monday was arrested on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after she was caught disposing of waste in the drain during the rain.
She was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the environmental offence.
The court subsequently sentenced her to one month in prison.
The development underscores the Lagos State Waste Management Authority’s renewed enforcement against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the practice of dumping refuse in drainage channels, which can obstruct water flow and worsen flooding.
LAWMA warned residents that dumping waste in drains and other unauthorised locations is an environmental offence punishable under the law.
The Authority said it would continue working with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.
Residents were urged to dispose of their waste responsibly and use approved waste disposal channels.
