Anambra Police Nab 28-Year-Old With ₦5.8m Suspected Hard Drugs

A journey that allegedly began as a drug delivery mission ended in arrest for a 28-year-old man, Chinedu Nwankwo, after police operatives intercepted him with suspected hard drugs worth an estimated ₦5.8 million in Anambra State.

Nwankwo was arrested in the early hours of Saturday, August 29, 2026, along the Nteje–Otuocha Road, during an intelligence-driven patrol by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command’s Rapid Response Team.

Police said the suspect was allegedly transporting a sizeable quantity of suspected Cannabis Sativa, Methamphetamine and Colorado (Colos).

The substances, according to the command, were allegedly destined for delivery to suspected criminal elements in Otuocha, Anam, Nzam, Umuleri and Aguleri areas of the state.

Police Probe Possible Election Link

Beyond the alleged drug trafficking, the arrest has raised another security concern as the police investigate whether the consignment may be connected to activities capable of disrupting the ongoing Local Government Council elections in Anambra State.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect and recovered exhibits had been taken into police custody.

He said investigators were working to determine the full extent of Nwankwo’s alleged activities and identify other individuals who may be connected to the suspected network.

CP: Drugs Can Fuel Criminality

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Nnanna Ama, commended the operatives for their vigilance and sustained patrols, particularly during the election period.

Ama said the arrest demonstrated the importance of intelligence-led policing and continuous patrols in preventing criminal activities.

He also warned about the wider security consequences of illicit drugs, stressing that drug trafficking and abuse could provide resources and embolden individuals involved in violent and other forms of crime.

The police command urged members of the public to steer clear of the trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs, warning that such activities are criminal offences punishable under Nigerian law.

Nwankwo remains in police custody while investigation continues.
