ANAMBRA GOVERNMENT IDENTIFIES CAUSE OF TWO-STOREY BUILDING COLLAPSE

Anambra State Government has identified poor construction and non-compliance with building regulations as the suspected cause of a two-storey building collapse at Inyaba Village, Umudim, Nnewi.

State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Chijioke Ojukwu, disclosed this while speaking on the incident, which occurred on Sunday.

The collapse triggered anxiety among residents, who were initially uncertain whether anyone was inside the building when it came down.

Speaking further, Ojukwu said his ministry would evacuate occupants of a three-storey building located within the same compound to prevent possible loss of life.

According to him, the three-storey structure will undergo a mandatory integrity test after its occupants have been evacuated.

He said it would be demolished if it fails to meet the required structural and safety standards.

Meanwhile, excavation and search operations are continuing at the site as emergency responders work to establish whether anyone was trapped beneath the rubble.

As at the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to confirm any casualty, while the number of possible victims, if any, remains unknown.
