UK Launches Digital Reform Programme in Abia to Improve Public Services, Create Jobs

The United Kingdom Government has launched a new digital governance reform programme in Abia State, with the goal of making government services more efficient, opening new opportunities for businesses and equipping more people with digital skills.

The initiative, known as the Policy, Regulatory and Institutional Reforms Enabling Digital Transformation (SPRIRT) programme, is expected to support reforms that could make it easier for citizens and businesses to interact with government in an increasingly digital economy.

Speaking at the launch in Umuahia, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Jonny Baxter, said the programme was designed to create an enabling environment for investment and digital innovation in Abia.

Baxter said the partnership was built around a shared understanding that technology could do more than connect people—it could help governments deliver services more effectively and create new economic opportunities.

“Digital technology can improve public services, create economic opportunities and enable governments to serve citizens more effectively,” he said.

The initiative builds on an existing digital collaboration between the UK and Abia State.

According to Baxter, about 450 civil servants have already benefited from the partnership through digital skills development, giving government workers new tools and knowledge to function more effectively in a changing digital environment.

Beyond government offices, the programme is also extending digital access to communities.

One of the digital hubs established through the collaboration is already operational at Okporoenyi Community, while another is located in Arochukwu, providing residents with opportunities to access digital resources and skills.

For many residents, such facilities could mean easier access to technology, improved digital literacy and greater opportunities to participate in the growing digital economy.

Technology as a Tool for Economic Growth

Governor Alex Otti said his administration was deliberately placing technology at the centre of its economic development strategy.

According to the governor, the state is using digital tools to create jobs, reduce the cost of running government and improve efficiency.
