Keke Ride Turns Into Trap as Police Arrest Three Alleged Phone Snatchers in Maiduguri
What appeared to be an ordinary Keke ride allegedly became a trap for unsuspecting passengers in Maiduguri, Borno State, where police have arrested three young men accused of using a tricycle to snatch passengers’ mobile phones.
The suspects, aged between 19 and 23, were arrested around the Baga Road area of the state capital following credible intelligence.
Police said six mobile phones and a Keke NAPEP allegedly used in the operation were recovered from the suspects.
The suspects were identified as 19-year-old Muhammed Ali, 20-year-old Alhaji Ahmed and 23-year-old Umar Alhassan.
According to the Borno State Police Command, the suspects allegedly posed as commercial tricycle operators before targeting unsuspecting passengers and snatching their handsets.
The arrest was carried out by police operatives in collaboration with the Borno State Traffic Management Agency, BOTMA, and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF.
The three suspects remain in police custody as investigators work to establish the full extent of their alleged activities and trace possible receivers or other persons connected with the offences.
Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, commended the security personnel and partner agencies involved in the operation.
He assured residents that the Command would continue to intensify efforts to protect lives and property and tackle street-level criminality across Borno State.
The police urged residents to remain vigilant while commuting and promptly report suspicious movements or suspected criminal activities to security agencies.
