A major tragedy was averted on Saturday morning at the PWD railway crossing, inward Oshodi, Lagos, after a moving train collided with a Honda Accord car attempting to cross the tracks, leaving the driver injured.
The incident occurred at about 7:07 a.m. when the train, reportedly travelling from Ikeja towards Oshodi, struck the passenger side of the car. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said its Eagle Response Team stationed at Cappa was immediately deployed to the scene following a distress call.
On arrival, emergency responders found the injured driver and provided medical assistance. LASEMA said its paramedics stabilised the victim, while no death was recorded in the incident.
Working alongside the Nigeria Police Force, the agency secured the scene and introduced traffic control and diversion measures to prevent further accidents.
Responders also awaited the arrival of a private towing vehicle to remove the damaged car from the railway track and restore safety around the crossing.
Reacting to the incident, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, urged motorists to exercise caution at railway crossings, obey traffic signals and adhere strictly to safety guidelines.
He also encouraged Lagos residents to report emergencies through the state’s toll-free lines, 767 and 112.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of attempting to cross railway tracks without ensuring it is safe to do so, as a moment of impatience or misjudgment can have life-threatening consequences.
