ARO/OHAFIA 2027: FOUR PARTIES, FOUR TESTS OF CHARACTER AND COMPETENCE

For the people of Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, Abia State, this period is a decisive moment, as they are confronted with the hard decision of choosing nothing but the best among the candidates campaigning to represent them in the House of Representatives. Getting it right this time around is very critical, as the constituency, which has suffered the brunt of inefficient representation, needs someone with the charisma, zeal, character and ability to bring the much-needed federal presence and intervention to the constituency.

ARO/OHAFIA 2027: FOUR PARTIES, FOUR TESTS OF CHARACTER AND COMPETENCE

APC,ADC,APC & NDC candidates for Aro/Ohafia Federal Constituency

Few months to the Presidential and National Assembly elections following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, electioneering is heating up gradually nationwide.
According to INEC’s revised timetable released on February 26, 2026, following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, January 16, 2027, while Governorship and State Assembly elections will hold on February 6, 2027. This was a revision from the earlier announced February 20 and March 6, 2027 dates.

As I scrolled through the INEC portal checking the list of aspirants vying to represent the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, I counted up to 14 candidates from across different parties.
For this analysis, without underestimating any candidate, I want to narrow my discussion to four parties as far as Abia State and Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency are concerned. These are the Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), All Progressives Congress (APC), and National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Looking at the contestants and their parties, many think that the 2027 General Election appears set to hold some surprises, with some appearing predictable while others are not.
In the Abia State of today, it is unthinkable for Governor Dr. Alex Otti not to win, as the governor, through his unprecedented achievements, has made himself even more attractive to the people. But the same cannot be said of others who share the same political platform with him.

As the people go to the polls, the parties to watch out for in Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency are the Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Any candidate from these parties can win at the various positions outside the position of governor.

Currently, there is a political awakening in Abia North, where Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency belongs. The people are asking questions and demanding effective and efficient representation from those who will represent them in the Red and Green Chambers in future, following the consensus that what they got from the past is nothing to write home about.
Abia North, especially Arochukwu/Ohafia, has suffered severe negligence stemming from poor representation and lack of accountability.
Over the years, communal and border crises have led to loss of lives, properties and livelihoods. The Isu Iheosu village is completely gone; Aba Isu, Ewe Community, Nde Ijoma and many more communities in Arochukwu Local Government Area are lost to boundary crises — some for over three decades and some for less — without strong advocacy for a boundary adjustment between Abia and Cross River. That alone points to the quality of representation this constituency has endured.
Again, all federal roads in this area have remained unattended. The Arochukwu-Ohafia federal roads have been in a terrible state for many years, and one begins to wonder what all the federal representatives are doing that they cannot push these projects into the national budget when their colleagues elsewhere are doing so. Or was it budgeted and the funds diverted?
Some may argue that they are lawmakers and have no executive powers for such projects. On this, I can show them Hon. Babajimi Benson of Ikorodu Federal Constituency, who, within a short period in office, has attracted an Immigration Office to Ikorodu, tarred many roads, expanded school infrastructure, facilitated scholarships, and empowered transporters and artisans.

The people of Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency should therefore put their eyes on the ground and take the coming election as a matter of life and death in saving their constituency and electing those who possess the character and ability to give them effective representation.

Ibe Okwara Osonwa

The following are the four contenders to watch for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency:
1. LABOUR PARTY (LP) — Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa (Incumbent)
Hon. Osonwa, who is 51 years old, is the current member representing the constituency. His strength lies in incumbency. His victory happened to be one of those that came relatively easily, capitalising on the popularity of Mr. Peter Obi, who contested for president under the Labour Party in 2023. A lot of people, whether popular or not, who contested under the Labour Party had an easy win.
What is working for him: He has the influence of incumbency. While others may still be struggling for election funds, he is accumulating a war chest. Recently, he was reportedly to have distributed some farm equipment and other items to the people, although this has also attracted lots of criticism, as people questioned why he did nothing for the constituency only to come now that the election is near, adding that it is all about winning the election.
Another thing that is working for him is that he shares the same party platform with Governor Alex Otti, who has performed very well in Abia, which is a major advantage. He has also been noted for motions on anti-corruption and support for gender-related legislation.
What is working against him: Many constituents are complaining about poor representation and lack of visible federal presence. The perception of failed empowerment schemes and absence of federal projects in Arochukwu/Ohafia puts him on a very tight spot. His distribution of farm equipment and other items has attracted more criticism. People said it is all about campaigning to win a second term.
The question is whether the Otti wave alone can save him.

Orji Kanu Emmanuel

2. AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS (ADC) — Orji Kanu
Hon. Orji Kanu Emmanuel, aged 52, is relatively new in partisan politics but comes with a lot of experience from the private sector. Those who have worked closely with him believe Arochukwu/Ohafia has an opportunity to change its destiny.
Orji is an educationist with a proven track record of successful advocacy on federal government intervention programmes, such as the national policy on non-state schools, where he was the secretary. He is also noted for scholarships and youth empowerment. He has served in many international organisations and was the Country Director of the University of Buckingham and the Nigeria Country Director of Ecotec, which was an international appointment.
He serves as the National President of one of the leading private schools associations, the National Secretary of the Non-State Schools Association, etc. His wealth of experience, backed by a strong academic position, makes him one of the best. Orji, till date, remains the first and only Igbo man to occupy the position of National President of the Association for Formidable Educational Development (AFED), an umbrella body of low-cost education providers in Nigeria.
His advantages: He has the strong presence of party chiefs in the constituency as an advantage, and the ADC has a strong national presence. With Alhaji Atiku Abubakar strongly associated with the ADC coalition in this election cycle, it makes him a candidate to watch out for.
Secondly, Orji has an organic support base following his identification with the masses, some of his classmates and associates whom he grew up with, and whom he has been supportive of. His particular interest in addressing communal and interstate boundary disputes affecting the constituency has also endeared him to the people.

Ikenna Nicolas

3. ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (APC) — Ikenna Ukwa Nicolas
The APC is the party at the centre. From recent verified reports, Mr. Ikenna Ukwa, 41 years old, emerged as the APC candidate for Ohafia/Arochukwu in the party’s primaries, while Chief Mrs. Mary Ikoku, a former aspirant in 2023, also contested strongly on a platform of human capital development and healthcare.
The APC advantage is clear: The party controls the centre — INEC, Police and other national law enforcement agencies are most times under its influence.
What is hanging on its candidature is the perception of imposition. There is a strong narrative in the constituency that candidates are imposed by powerful forces in Abuja, with some stakeholders alleging the influence of the Senate President. This imposition narrative has always worked against APC in this constituency — the party has never won Arochukwu/Ohafia.

Ifeanyi Elvis Ogbonna

4. NIGERIA DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS (NDC) — Hon. Ifeanyi Elvis Ogbonna (Ignis)
Elvis Ogbonnaya, 37 years old, is another candidate to watch out for. He is a businessman, youth leader and philanthropist popularly known as “Ignis.”
Background research shows he was formerly an APC chieftain who was disqualified during the APC screening exercise in May 2025, which generated controversy. He then defected to the NDC and clinched the party’s ticket in a primary held in Abia, where he was declared winner by Chief Asukewe Ikoawaji, Chairman of the NDC Primary Committee.
Over 2,000 supporters merged under the Concerned Progressives of Arochukwu and Ohafia (CPAO) and NDC Youth Consultative Vanguard to pledge over 10,000 votes for him.
His advantage: He is relying strongly on the Obi wave, which is said to be very strong in the East, and his philanthropic record — scholarships, skill acquisition with starter packs, fertiliser distribution, and rural healthcare interventions.
His disadvantage: His political journey — jumping from APC, crossing through possibilities in ADC and now a candidate of the NDC — makes it possible for people to look at him as a desperado.
In conclusion,
This election remains a tough one for all players, and I hope for a free and fair election where the people’s will counts.
Today, political awakening and awareness are high. Voters have gotten the message that character is more important than money bags, integrity over party patronage, and competence over sentiment. That is what is important if we must join other constituencies whose representation is working.
The era of electing representatives who disappear after elections must end in Arochukwu/Ohafia.
